Become a Befriender –

Make Volunteering Count

The Befriending Service exists to provide long term emotional support to older people in their own homes. Our clients may have become isolated from their friends, families and neighbours and have difficulties getting out and about.

Volunteer Befrienders are matched with an older person on a one to one basis according to their interests and requirements. By maintaining regular contact, the Volunteer Befriender can help preserve the befriendee’s quality of like. Volunteer Befrienders can also help lessen the sense of isolation and depression often experienced by older people and maybe encourage social and community involvement.

Volunteer Befrienders are as varied and as interesting as the people they befriend but they need to have certain qualities to enable them to carry out their role. Some of the important attributes are:-
• Reliability e.g. keeping to arrangements whenever possible.
• Accountability e.g. working within the service guidelines
• A non-judgemental attitude
• Flexibility
• Warmth
• A Commitment to the well-being of older people.

We offer the Volunteer:-

• A full induction programme
• Ongoing support and regular contact with the co-ordinator
• The opportunity to meet other volunteers
• Expenses
